After just having been gone for the majority of October, I came home to my husband asking us what we were planning to be for Halloween this year. As you can see, we’ve taken it pretty serious in the past… and it’s one of those things that is completely unplanned until the last minute. We’re actually committed to two non-Halloween events next weekend — a charity event I’m heading to with Dolce & Gabbana Friday and a black tie wedding for my cousin on Saturday. It’ll be the first Halloween weekend we’re missing out on in a few years, so I had to let Raj know the answer is “nothing” and we’ll likely be in formal wear instead.
In case you’re scrambling for last minute ideas, here are two of our recent favorites from 2015 and 2016. Let me preface by saying that EVERY SINGLE PERSON YOU KNOW is probably going to want to be Jon Snow & Daenerys Targaryen from Game of Thrones this year for VERY obvious reasons (if you watch the show). But, let me just remind you that our costume was from 2015. TWO YEARS AGO!!!! We had just binged watched the show and felt extremely behind on the times (so much had already happened in Westeros) and we wanted to jump on the bandwagon. We were just wrapping up season 5 when Halloween approached and I went on the hunt for costumes. I found Daenerys pretty easy (blue dress and a bleach blonde wig) but couldn’t find ANYTHING for Raj for Khal Drogo (her first husband). I searched all around online and a few Halloween stores and was seriously so frustrated that I just picked up a freaking Jon Snow cape, a wig, and a sword and called it a day. Raj was at first confused because the two characters had NOTHING to do with each other but sucked it up and we made it work for two different Halloween parties that year. My costume wasn’t original AT ALL and we bumped into more than a few girl’s wearing a Daenerys costume, complete with Drogo and even a dog or baby as a dragon accessory. Even with the costume not really falling into the “couple” category that we usually do, it was still one of our favorites, so Raj photoshopped one of our photos to be ON A THRONE with Mischa as a little dragon. I seriously considered using it as a holiday card.
The next year, we found ourselves in quite the predicament because we really felt we needed to top the EPICness that was the year before. Raj had suggested Eleven and Mike from Stranger Things, but the show was SO new (and we were worried enough people hadn’t seen it). I wanted to do a throwback or something not as current, so we both decided on Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake and those infamous double denim ensembles they wore to the music awards back in 2001 (it was the 15 year anniversary). This one took a little longer to find all the pieces and included a little DIY.
GAME OF THRONES’ JON SNOW & DAENERYS TARGARYEN
FOR HER
Girlfriend wore a blue maxi dress with a big gold belt back in the day but has since moved on to a more warrior-looking wardobe in her fight for the throne, so you can definitely choose to go old school Dany or new school Dany. You’ll most definitely need to top it off with a blonde wig with braids.
- Blue Maxi Dress
- Warrior Costume
- Blonde Wig
- Boots (I wore my Stuart Weitzman ones)
FOR HIM
In order to not spend $500 on these costumes, I went with just the cape for Jon Snow (aka my husband). Raj wore a leather jacket under the cape and his own black jeans and boots. I bought a black curly wig (which you can now throw into a man bun if you so wish since he changed his look), and we darkened Raja’s facial hair with a drugstore brow gel!
BRITNEY SPEARS & JUSTIN TIMBERLAKE DOUBLE DENIM
FOR HER
For some strange reason, there isn’t a costume you can buy for this look (I know, right?!) so I had to buy mine in bits and pieces. I found the EXACT pieces I put together for this look below! I topped it off with a blonde wig, lots of gaudy accessories, and A LOT of makeup and highlighter.
FOR HIM
We couldn’t find a denim blazer to save our lives, so Raj actually bought a denim shirt and then cut and glued some man-made lapels to it to make it look like a blazer. He found two pair of old jeans and used one for the denim scraps and one for the actual jeans he wore with the patches. He topped it off with a denim hat (added the waist from the scrap pair of jeans) and found a hideous pair of stunna shades.
What are you all being for Halloween this year?! Would love to hear your costume ideas!
